      The origins of rock and roll emerged in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when various popular musical genres of the time, including country, blues, folk, rhythm and blues and gospel combined to give rise to a new style of music. It evolved during a time when racial tensions in the United States were coming to the surface. This new music combined elements of both white and black music and inevitably provoked strong reactions. The massive popularity with the youth of the time gave it a unique social impact. The era was poised for an explosive clash of social change. From a humble back ground of county fairs and high school gyms hip gyrations and sex appeal produced the first teen idols. It wasn't long before claims of 'Satan's Music' and the effects on young people were making headlines. It was easy to see females swooning and sweaty crowds swaying to the intoxicating beat. Social barriers began to disintegrate as traditionally black music blended with the new genre and resounded with hip white radio listeners. Social tensions furthered as the birth of the sexual revolution now had a scapegoat. Despite crys for censorship the beat went on. A new generation now had a music to call it's own.
      Rock and Roll quickly became a stage event and did not disappoint fans nor critics. Musicians decked out in flashy clothes and plenty of skin exposure heralded the stage performance as a major part of early rock and roll. And along with the throngs of young audience members came the warnings of social degradation and satanic predation. Empowered by the very criticism meant to curb popularity it burst into the 1960's with an energy never seen before. From simple beginnings came the music that changed a generation and the world they came to inherit. Far beyond a musical style, rock and roll, found a home in movies and in the new medium of television and influenced lifestyles, fashion, attitudes, and even our language.
